My Week In Westminster: w/c 16th February

This week, Parliament has been in recess, which has meant I've spent a wonderful week in our community (and also means a very short edition of the newsletter!).

Highlights include a visit to Ossett United to discuss how I can support their unstoppable ascent to the Premier League, a trip up to Sandal Castle to promote local tourism, a visit to Pinderfields to discuss local maternity care, and a brilliant catch-up with the Rotary Club.

I'm spending much of the rest of the week in the south of our constituency, visiting small businesses and meeting residents' groups across Shelley, Shepley and Emley, as well as hosting a coffee morning for residents as mentioned in last week's edition.

Although Parliament hasn’t been sitting, I still wanted to draw your attention to some great announcements from the last few days.

Firstly, it was brilliant to read about the Government's plans to unlock £45 million of investment for our creative and cultural sector. This commitment includes a plan to convene sector stakeholders of all sizes to better understand where further investment opportunities are.

I was also pleased to see the Department for Science, Technology and Innovation launch a new campaign to support business owners in protecting themselves against cybercrime. I'm happy to report this includes small and medium-sized businesses.

Elsewhere, the Department of Health and Social Care announced plans to increase the tax allowance for working-age adults who receive social care. The move represents the largest above-inflation uplift in more than a decade and benefits 150,000 people.

Further, on Thursday, I was encouraged to see that the Prime Minister has confirmed his plan to introduce a law which would see social media companies compelled to take down abusive images from the internet within 48-hours of them being posted.

I hope you all have wonderful weekends, and as ever, thank you for reading.
